Australia and Pakistan enjoy a common heritage and shared interests. Both countries are members of the Commonwealth and share a passion for sport.
People from Pakistan have been in Australia since the 1860s. According to the 1901 Census there were 600 cameleers in Australia, 240 of whom were Afghan while the remainder were born in north Indian provinces in what is now modern Pakistan.
According to the 2016 census, there were more than 61,000 Pakistan-born people living in Australia. More than 13,000 Pakistanis are studying at Australian universities. In 2018 there were 72 Pakistanis studying in Australia on long-term scholarships under the Australia Awards program. These awards promote knowledge, education links and enduring ties between Australia and Pakistan.
